The Sacramento City Council has approved the budget for the next fiscal year.
The $961.1 million budget includes several items that were just recently added to the spending plan.
Dawn Holm, the city's budget manager, says $22.5 million is included in the budget to address the council's budget priorities including recruiting efforts to diversify the city's police force, additional park rangers and fire station replacement.
"[Priorities include] gang prevention, homelessness, economic development and last, but not least on the list, the direction of $4.2 million in one-time General Fund revenues to the economic uncertainty reserve, meeting council’s minimum threshold reserve level of 10 percent," says Holm.
Within the last month, the council approved an additional $458,000 for homeless programs. The total includes money for a 24-hour Volunteers of America shelter and 20 beds for women at the Salvation Army.
The council also agreed to fund a study to determine if the city should reimburse non-profits if they've been successful with their homeless projects instead of paying for the projects beforehand.
The new budget also includes an additional $1.7 million that will be spent on a water meter and wastewater projects that will bring the total allocated for those projects to $17.2 million. The city has the money to spend because of an increase in water and wastewater rates this March.
The budget is balanced, but the city forecasts a deficit next year.
