A former member of the Army National Guard has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for attempting to join the terrorist organization, ISIS.
Nicholas Teausant was arrested in 2014 on a train bound for Canada. He intended to continue traveling on to Syria to join ISIS. The people he had been contacting were actually undercover FBI agents.
Jean Hobler is an Assistant U.S. Attorney in California. She says Teausant came to the attention of the FBI with his social media posts.
"The types of things he was posting on the internet suggested to us he had some intent of either engaging in conduct in the United States or overseas," says Hobler. "He was talking about how he was a member of the military. He was in National Guard Reserves, Army, and that he wanted to take down America and things along those lines that tends to suggest he wanted to engage in violence."
The U.S. Attorney's Office is also prosecuting a Sacramento man for lying to investigators about his involvement with a terrorist organization in late 2013.
