Poll results in California’s Democratic presidential primary have varied widely in recent weeks, but there is growing evidence that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s once-large lead over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has nearly vanished.
A new Field Poll shows Clinton ahead of Sanders by just two points – 45 percent to 43 percent.
That's the second highly respected California poll to show the candidates within the margin of error, following last week's Public Policy Institute of California survey. A new NBC/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll also showed Clinton with a two-point lead here.
No surprise, then, that both candidates will be campaigning up and down the state in the days leading up to Tuesday’s primary. Sanders hasn't left the state in more than a week and has spent much of the last month in California. Hillary and Bill Clinton are both returning to the state Thursday with events expected through Monday.
Clinton holds a solid edge in the Field Poll among the quarter of the electorate who say they’ve already voted by mail. She’s also ahead with older voters, Latinos and women. Sanders continues his strong showing with young and first-time voters, and Californians registered without party preference.
