Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe (Etixx-Quick-step) maintains a slight lead in the 2016 Amgen Tour of California after Friday's time trial in Folsom.
But, Australian Rohan Dennis (BMC) used the day to rocket around the 12.6 mile course in 24:16 and narrow the gap between him and the leader to just 16 seconds.
Dennis's teammate, North Carolina's Brent Brookwalter is 38 seconds back in third.
New York's Andrew Talansky (Cannondale) finished second in the time trial and is fourth overall, 47 seconds behind.
Colorado's Taylor Phinney led the time trial for a full hour, but was clipped by Talansky and Dennis. Phinney won stage five of the tour in 2014.
Roseville's Neilson Powless (Aexon Hagens Berman) moved from sixth to fifth and extended his lead in the Best Young Rider category to about a minute and a half.
South Lake Tahoe/Santa Rosa's Peter Stetina (Trek) dropped from second place to 13th when Alaphilipe's time bested his by 1:40.
In the women's team time trial, Twenty-16 used the stage to help Idaho's Kristin Armstrong move closer to the overall leader: New York/Mountain View's Megan Guarnier (Boels Dolmans).
Armstrong is 12 seconds back. Guarnier's teammate, Evelyn Stevens of San Francisco/Massachusetts is :22 behind.
Stage seven for the men and three for the women will start and end in Santa Rosa Saturday.
