(AP) - California's secretary of state says the number of registered Democratic voters increased since January while Republicans lost ground.
The rise of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has been cited as an incentive to register to vote both for and against him.
So far, the figures released Thursday show Democrats coming out ahead as Californians prepare for next month's presidential primary election.
Democrats have nearly 44 percent of all registered voters as of early April, a slight increase of nearly 100,000 voters since January.
Republicans remained at around 28 percent of the electorate and voters with no party preference are also steady around 24 percent of registered voters.
In all, California has about 17.3 million registered voters.
