Congressman Ami Bera's father has pleaded guilty to illegally funding two of Bera's campaigns for Congress.
Babulal Bera funneled $269,000 in contributions through friends, family and aquaintances to his son's campaigns from 2009-2012.
Finance law only allowed him to donate $4,900 in that period.
Richard Evans is one of the prosecuting attorneys with the Department of Justice Criminal Division Public Integrity Section.
"We have cases from around the country and I think just the breadth of it - that it spanned at least two election cycles and hundreds of thousands of dollars," says Evans. "I think most of the cases we've dealt with are more in the few dozen contributions as opposed to nearly 100 in this instance. So, I think this one of the larger ones at least that I've been associated with."
Under a plea agreement, Babulal Bera faces 30-months in prison. He will be sentenced August 4.
Prosecutors say they could find no proof Ami Bera or his staff knew of his father's scheme.
Bera's campaign has failed to respond to requests for comment.
Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones is running against Bera for his congressional seat.
