The Sacramento City Council is expected to vote Tuesday evening whether to approve $2 million to further study the Community Center Theater and Sacramento Convention Center renovation project.
The city says plans for the theater are almost complete, but the same can't be said for the convention center.
Fran Halbakken is with the City Manager's Office. She says she will ask the council to delay a decision on construction phases until the city has a better understanding of what it can afford. Some theater groups and hotels have suggested theater renovations be limited to times when the facility is dark.
"So, they're asking that we kind of hold all of the work on the theater to four summer months," says Halbakken. "We are asking the council not to make that decision, yet, because we want to look at all of the various options of how we could deliver this project."
Halbakken says the city could close the theater and move performances elsewhere for a year while crews perform all of the work at once.
The city has set aside $10 million for the project already and would also use $170 million from hotel room taxes.
It hopes to raise at least $20 million in private donations and sponsorships.
