Road construction on the northbound I-5 airport off ramp will begin tomorrow evening, with possible delays for people heading to the Sacramento International Airport.
Cal Trans is extending one of the lanes on the off ramp to ease congestion during peak travel hours.
According to the airport's Laurie Slothower, Cal Trans has established a detour that will take you past the airport, before you double back on county roads and southbound I-5.
"Exit 531. The sign says County Road 122 and then you follow that around til you get to Old River Road," she says. "You take a right on Old River Road, follow that to County Road 118 and merge back on to southbound I-5."
She recommends giving yourself an extra half an hour to make your flight.
"I have driven this detour both using the WAZE application, and my ten-year-old-car GPS, which is not satellite-based," she says. "As soon as I got off of exit 531, both of my GPSs could direct me back to the airport."
You can also take Elverta to the Garden Highway to reach the airport from the north.
Lane restrictions start at 7 p.m. There are more than 60 flights out of the airport between then and midnight.
Work on the southbound off ramp is expected to begin next month.
