The City of Sacramento unveiled a new sports field Friday, in an area that did not previously have one.
The new sports field is adjacent to the Main Avenue Elementary School in the Robla School District.
La Shelle Dozier, with the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, says this is the first park or play area installed in the Robla area.
The new sports field includes turf, landscaping, irrigation, drainage and a walking track.
"Before... there was the big brown thing, which really was an empty lot full of dirt," says Dozier. "They weren't able to play in that area. They were confined to the pavement. Sometimes they just stayed inside because there wasn't enough area for them to get out and run around."
Dozier says it's important that the field is open to the public.
"In addition to the children being able to access that particular playground, they will be open to the public and we really like when there is a joint-use type of agreement so that the community can take advantage of that especially in an area like this where there isn't a public park or recreational area," she says. "So, now this is open to the community. People can come out and walk the track and get their exercise in. It serves dual purposes."
The Robla School District paid $190,000 and the city contributed $150,000 for the project.
