An extensive construction project could soon be coming to downtown Stockton. Developers say the project would represent a big comeback for a city removed from bankruptcy two years ago.
The proposed development is called the Open Window Project. David Garcia is with the development company behind it, Ten Space. He says right now, downtown Stockton has too much blight.
"There's a lot of empty parking lots," says Garcia. "There's a lot of under utilized buildings. And our vision for the Open Window Project is to completely transform the core of downtown Stockton into a walkable, liveable, thriving urban center."
Garcia says the project is privately funded and would include more than 1,000 residential units and 400,000 square feet of commercial space in the heart of downtown.
He says for a while, revitalization in Stockton has been driven by large public works projects like the marina and the ballpark.
"What has been lacking is the private investment to really bring residential into the downtown area," says Garcia.
The city council is scheduled to vote on the project on February 23rd. So far there is no organized opposition.
