The Amgen Tour of California bicycle race has announced the routes for this year's men's and women's races.
Stage six of the men's race and stage two of the women's race will be a 12.6 mile time trial beginning and ending in Folsom on Friday, May 20th. Riders will begin on Leidesdorff Street and double back after reaching the intersection of Green Valley Road and Sophia Parkway.
Two days later, stage eight for the men will take them down out of Sacramento, down Jefferson Boulevard and around Ryer Island.
For William Walby of City Bicycle Works, the final stage reminds him of conditions racers might find in Belgium.
"It's the same kind of roly-poly open land, kind of like Holland as well. You could get nasty head winds out there. That could create some trouble for the peloton, especially coming back if we have winds out of the north," he says. "It could break them up a little bit, cause some echeloning, and might give somebody a chance to get away, but who knows?"
On the same day, the fourth and final stage of the women's race will be held. The women will complete 20 laps through downtown Sacramento. Riders will start at the Capitol, race down N Street to 15th, then P, then18th before returning up L Street.
This is the first time the Amgen Tour has finished in Sacramento.
