Yolo County says it is pleased with a component of its holiday food drive that allowed people to use canned food to pay off library fines.
The "Food for Fines" program collected more than 5,100 cans in lieu of monetary donations.
Patty Wong is the Yolo County Librarian. She says many people who have fines have limited transportation to return books, or little money to pay fines.
"We wanted to welcome everyone back into the community," says Wong. "It was a win-win in this spirit of giving time that people would be able to share in the bounty of other people’s sharing of food and at the same time inviting our community to come back into the library."
2015 was the first year for the program. Eight branches participated.
The drive collected 6,000 cans of food all told.
