Once the City of Sacramento approves the building permits, Theater for Children Inc. can begin construction on the new B Street Theater project.
Sacramento City Council member Steve Hansen says a council decision to increase its support of the project to $3 million is a good one.
"Think about K Street as a spine of arts and entertainment that spans from Old Sacramento through the arena up through Midtown where Sutter's Fort is, the hospital, B Street, the Fremont School for the Performing Arts, and that whole campus on N Street."
Theater for Children Inc. plans to build two new theaters and a restaurant in Midtown at the corner of Capitol Avenue and 27th Street.
Hansen says the new theaters and other new projects will pair nicely with projects that already exist or are planned.
"This new theater, with the hotel that Randy Paragary's planned, with the new Sutter Hospital and all these other things fits in with building our community up so we can continue to raise the bar philanthropically and artistically for the region."
At its last meeting, the city council increased the city's commitment to the project by $500,000 from $2.5 million to $3 million.
The council is technically loaning the project the money, but the loan will be forgiven if the theater operators meets some requirements.
They include 540 half-price matinee tickets for students in the Sacramento City Unified School District, 18 performances for school children, and four uses of the site annually by the City of Sacramento for meetings or events each year.
Though the new theater will no longer operate on B Street, operators plan to keep the name.
