The Sacramento City Council voted Tuesday to support placing a new parcel tax measure on the June 2016 ballot.
Rivkah Sass is executive director of the Sacramento Public Library. She says the city currently collects about $5 million from the tax
"This accounts for about 33-percent of the funding we get from the City of Sacramento to operate the twelve libraries in the city," says Sass.
The parcel tax was approved by voters as part of Measure X in 2004. Depending on the type of property, the annual tax is between $8 and $31 a year.
The tax is scheduled to expire in 2017. Rather than wait until then, and pay for a special election, the council voted unanimously to ask the city manager to propose a ballot measure for consideration next month.
The libraries operate under a joint powers authority agreement with Sacramento County. The county pays about 55-percent of the overall operating budget. The city's share of $15.5 million is about 39 percent of the total budget.
