The Sacramento City Council has declined the city finance department's request to vote on a range of options for dealing with $452 million in unfunded medical benefits.
The options included abolishing all medical benefits, reducing benefits by half or requiring employees and the city to increase their contributions to a medical benefit trust fund.
The range of options could save the city between $31 million and $269 million.
The city identified Firefighters Local 522 as having the highest benefits -- 40 percent of the benefits due, despite having only 20 percent of the city's employees.
The proposals will now go before the council's Law and Legislation Committee.
