The Sacramento City Council Tuesday approved a non-binding term sheet between the city and the Sacramento Republic FC soccer team. The agreement supports the construction of a new $180 million stadium at the Railyards.
New renderings of the stadium by the design company HNTB show it would be enclosed. The company's Scott Capstack says the design includes the central element of the soccer team's logo.
"The star itself and could that be actually part of the architecture of the building and become part of that iconic gesture," says Capstack. "Taking a piece and the element of the star, cycling through some of the sketches that we've generated and could one of the legs of the star actually be the structure that helps hold up the canopy of the building."
The soccer team would be responsible for almost all of the costs associated with building a new stadium. The city would pay about $100,000 for consultants to negotiate a final deal.
Assistant City Manager John Dangberg says $46 million of infrastructure projects are in varying stages of completion for the area between the Sacramento train depot and the River District.
"This location provides the public with a return on its investment in the public infrastructure that has been place in the Railyards," says Dangberg. "This is precisely why these investments were made in the Railyards -to open up opportunities for projects such as this."
The Railyards project includes development of 6.8 million square feet of retail and office space.
The term sheet would go into effect if Major League Soccer invites Sac Republic to be a franchise. The stadium would seat 25,000 people and could be ready to open by May of 2018 depending on the MLS. The team has played in the USL-PRO league its first two years and won the championship its inaugural season.
The San Francisco 49ers and the Sacramento Kings are part owners of the team, which plays in the USL-PRO league. Eldorado Towne Center General Partner Kevin Nagle is the team's lead investor.
