Sacramento police have made an arrest in last month's late-night stabbing of French train attack hero Spencer Stone outside a Midtown bar.
Police Chief Sam Somers, Jr. says 28-year-old James Tran of Elk Grove was taken into custody Wednesday in his car.
Somers told reporters at Sacramento Police headquarters that there were two groups of people involved in the incident.
"There was an interaction between the two that was verbal, and then de-escalated," the chief said. "And then subsequent to that, Mr. Tran re-engaged Mr. Stone, and it escalated from there into a physical fight."
Somers says Tran circled around Stone and then stabbed him from behind, causing life-threatening wounds.
He says police were able to identify the vehicle used by Tran to flee the area after the stabbing from an image on a camera mounted on a pole at a street corner known as a "pod device."
Tran has a gang affiliation but Somers says the Stone stabbing does not appear to be gang-related. The chief says although the investigation is ongoing, everyone else involved in the fight is being viewed as witnesses, not suspects.
Stone has since been released from the hospital. He and two childhood friends from Sacramento tackled and disarmed a gunman before he could opening fire on a high-speed train traveling from Amsterdam to Paris.
Original story: Sacramento Police officials say they've made an arrest in relation to stabbing attack against Spencer Stone, one of the three Sacramento locals who thwarted a train attack in Europe.
In a press conference, Chief Sam Somers says James Tran, a 28-year-old Elk Grove resident, was arrested Wednesday morning.
Somers says Tran is being charged with attempted murder.
The stabbing took place Wed. Oct. 7 around midnight. Police say Stone was out with friends when his group got into an altercation in Midtown.
Stone was treated at UC Medical Center and was released Oct. 15.
