The next time you use your cell phone to make a 9-1-1 call to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, it won't have to be relayed by the CHP. The department has spent $18 million for a new dispatch center.
The department spent $9 million on new technology and operating systems.
Sheriff Scott Jones says the department's technology was so old it could no longer be supported.
"They often had to go to other 9-1-1 call center graveyards that were already updated to try and find pieces and equipment to be able to accommodate our repairs.
Construction cost $5 million. The new center has twice the number of work stations as the old building on G Street.
Tamika Wright is a dispatcher. She says each work station is adjustable which allows employees to sit or stand comfortably.
"Oh my god, breath of fresh air, I mean these quarters are beautiful. We have open windows, natural light coming in. "
The department has 10 vacancies in its communications department and is recruiting to fill them now.
