Construction crews have begun work on the roof of the new arena in downtown Sacramento. Crews have also begun work on a new hotel and garage.
This week, workers are installing the second truss for the Golden One Center's roof, while others are welding the decorative facade to the arena. They are also adding electrical, plumbing and interior walls.
At the corner of 5th and J streets, heavy equipment operators are preparing the soil and underground foundation for a garage, a 250-room hotel and as many as 50 residential units.
This phase of development includes 300,000 square feet of retail and 128,000 square feet of office space. Phase one of development will equal 715,000 square feet -- about half of the final amount.
Crews have almost finished removing the walkway over 5th Street that once connected the two halves of the Downtown Plaza Mall.
Retail shops could open next summer, around the time the arena officially becomes home to the Kings.
The hotel is expected to open in 2017.
