The Sacramento City Council will likely consider whether to replace the Community Racial Profiling Commission with a new Sacramento Police Commission Tuesday.
The new commission would review the Sacramento Police Department's community engagement efforts, diversity, and training programs.
Councilwoman Angelique Ashby says it will do more of what people expected when the Racial Profiling Commission was created to review racial profiling data from traffic stops.
"I think what the public and the community really wanted was a more robust dialog between law enforcement and community on both sides of the issues," says Ashby. "So, we've really tried to come and replicate the best practices from models across the country to create something very special that we think will work well in Sacramento."
The new commission would not have authority to review cases of police officer misconduct.
The commission will have 11 members including representatives of religious, minority, and retired law enforcement communities.
