Many nonprofits have criticized the extensive red tape the City of Stockton requires for staging special events. The city council will consider an ordinance that would help nonprofits cut through regulations that make it difficult and expensive to stage special events...from parades to street fairs.
Among the ideas is offering an umbrella insurance policy to cover event organizers.
Denise Jefferson, who heads up the Stockton Is Magnificent celebration, says that would be a good thing.
"That eliminates the headache of going out and trying to find insurers who will insure a small event."
Jefferson says Stockton is Magnificent, which celebrates the spirit of the city, had to move off city property to Delta College to avoid requirements which would have almost tripled the cost of the event.
"Eliminating the requirement for the one day business license needs to be enacted because that like I said has no benefit to anyone."
Jefferson says other problems facing event organizers are street closure and police security policies.
