The Sacramento City Council has approved a $500,000 Art and Culture fund. The fund was created with the goal of supporting arts in diverse and underserved neighborhoods of the city.
Cheryl Holben chairs the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission. She says currently, SMAC can only provide grants to 55 of the 100 arts organizations in the city she knows of.
"This $500,000 for the cultural equity program is really going to allow us to fund small-budget arts organizations that will allow them to serve the underserved populations in Sacramento," says Holben.
The SMAC proposal to the city council included a map of parts of the city that would be allowed to apply for grants of up to $20,000.
Some council members called the map exclusionary, so SMAC members will determine the merits of the organizations and their proposals based on the goals behind the creation of the fund.
Money for the fund comes from the sale of city property at the corner of Howe Avenue and Fair Oaks Boulevard.
SMAC hopes the money will last for three years.
