The state Senate approved a measure that would expand guaranteed job protection for Californians taking family leave to employees of businesses with 25 or more workers. Currently, that protection only applies in businesses with 50 or more employees.
But the Assembly rejected a bill that would have required double-pay for employees who work on Thanksgiving. And an Assembly measure that would have required food and retail businesses to set their employee schedules two weeks in advance – with extra pay for employees whose schedules change – did not even come up for a vote.
In other action, each chamber approved separate bills that would regulate medical marijuana, ahead of an expected recreational marijuana measure on next year’s ballot.
All approved bills now move to the opposite chamber.
