Crews are about six months into construction of Sacramento's new downtown arena and are already about halfway done with some key components of the project.
Robert Synhorst is the project manager for Icon Venue Group. He says about half of the steel required for the project has been installed.
"We've started structural steel up to about the main concourse level. The practice facility, which is just east of the arena -the steel has been erected all the way through the roof and they have started different trades such as concrete, even the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire sprinkler trades."
The foundation is nearly finished. Crews poured concrete for the southwest corner last night.
Once the entire foundation is complete, crews will turn off the groundwater pumps they installed to keep the area free from moisture.
The middle section of the old Downtown Plaza Mall has been gutted and is scheduled to be demolished later this summer.
Members of the League of California Cities recently toured the site.
Randall Stone is a Chico city councilman.
"It's great to see them pull away from the north part of the city -come right down into the city. Sometimes that can be controversial. I know some people in my community that are disappointed a portion of the mall is gone. But, a multi-use sports/entertainment facility right in the downtown will change the entire feel for the downtown area."
The site of the new hotel tower on the J Street side of the arena is still bare earth.
The entire project is scheduled to be complete by October 2016.
