The organization behind Sacramento's "Big Day of Giving" has commissioned a study of the Sacramento region's food system.
Linda Beech Cutler with the Sacramento Region Community Foundation says many organizations work to supply people with healthy food, but they're not talking to each other.
"As much activity as we hear about -Farm to Fork and all the food-related initiatives, there a lot of activities going on that are disconnected. We still have most of our food leaving the region. Most of our food we consume is not grown in the region. We still have significant amounts of hunger."
Cutler says the group Valley Vision will conduct the study. The group will also create an action plan to improve the availability of locally-grown food and reduce the number of "food deserts."
The study and plan are expected to be ready for Sacramento's "Farm To Fork Week" in September.
The foundation manages 500 charitable funds and endowments totaling $120 million. This is the first time it has directly addressed food availability and hunger in the region.
Valley Vision will receive $76,000 for the study and development of an action plan.
