The latest survey of Sacramento area gas stations shows prices have gone up by a whopping 40 cents a gallon in the last week.
Tracking service Gas Buddy says the average price for a gallon of gas is now $3.18. That's 84 cents higher than a month ago.
Gas Buddy analyst Patrick DeHaan says "new records were broken...in California as prices spiked at their fastest pace ever."
He says a rash of refinery problems, including an explosion at a California refinery, has pushed wholesale prices higher.
The price spikes are expected to slow over the next week.
