02/06/2015: More than 230 students from 26 schools will compete in the Sacramento County Academic Decathlon tomorrow. The event at Inderkum High School will be one of dozens of decathlons held statewide.
Craig Irish is the decathlon coordinator. He says the students will be tested on ten disciplines and how they may relate to innovations in alternative energy.
"The goal of the whole thing is basically to give kids who enjoy learning an opportunity to show what they know. It's different than the classroom setting because in the classroom they have to do that. This is something that's extra and so they can do this and learn about a topic that may not be covered in the classroom and they can get recognized for that.
Schools will send a group of "A" students, "B" students, and "C" students to the decathlon.
The event includes a day of essays and tests and will end with a quiz show.
Three of the schools are from Placer County. They will compete against each other.
Sacramento County Office of Education expects to have results for the Sacramento contest on Tuesday.
