The widow of murdered Sacramento County Sheriff's deputy Danny Oliver will be in the audience for President Obama's State of the Union address tonight.
Susan Oliver says she hopes the opportunity helps her family in its efforts to improve relationships between poor neighborhoods and law enforcement.
She says her husband grew up in a poor neighborhood and it was a teacher at Grant Union High School who helped guide him away from trouble and into a career.
"Some of the youth don't have guidance from someone like that. Maybe, how do we do more of that in those communities I think is what I would like to see. But, I think all communities should be educated. But, there may be some special needs in areas where they need more communication or they need more opportunities. And, that's what I'm looking at doing."
Oliver says a new foundation she and her children are starting will offer education to law enforcement and children who live in areas where the police are often seen as the enemy.
"My goal is to help bring back community with law enforcement by educating both sides and offering opportunities for children to become more aware of what police do. And, starting at a younger age by outreach programs to them by educational opportunities, we're looking at scholarships for children who may be interested in law enforcement."
For the State of the Union address, she will be the guest of Representative Ami Bera.
