The new Watt Avenue Interchange at U.S. 50 is now officially open for traffic. The interchange was designed to double capacity to 100,000 cars a day.
John Jaeger was the project manager for Sacramento County. According to him, the interchange is one of many improvements between LaRiviera Drive and the light rail station south of Folsom Boulevard.
"It's what I like to call a complete interchange," Jaeger says. "So we have not only the capacity that we've added for vehicles, the dedicated bus lane that brings it into the light rail station, but we've also separated pedestrians and bikes from the interchange. So, that really makes it safer for everybody."
Sue Teranishi is with the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates. She and other cyclists were on hand for the ribbon cutting.
"Watt Avenue is so fast and busy and to have a safer place for people to walk and bicycle is really important."
The project was bid at $23 million, but cost $25 million.
