The City of Sacramento recorded a drop in crime of 14-percent last year compared to 2013. There were fewer rapes, robberies, burglaries, vehicle thefts and homicides.
The 29 murders last year is the lowest number in the city since 1973.
Sergeant Doug Morse says the department gives credit to the social media site nextdoor-dot-com and more people working to make their neighborhoods better.
"At the root of our community partnership is our neighborhood watch programs. We saw numbers of the established groups soar nearly double what we had in 2013 all the way up to 338 established groups."
Morse says the "Cops and Clergy" and "Summer Night Lights" programs were also effective in lowering the crime rate.
There were 3100 fewer crimes committed in 2014 compared to the year before.
The 14-percent drop in crime followed a 10-percent drop in the previous year.
