The Sacramento City Council tonight will hear a plan that would have the city spend 33-million dollars over the next five years on fuel for its vehicles.
The City of Sacramento uses 1.6 million gallons of unleaded gas, ethanol, and diesel fuel each year.
This year, the Sacramento Area Council of Governments or SACOG solicited fuel contract bids on behalf of the City and other government agencies with the hope of negotiating a good deal.
Keith Leech is the fleet manager for the City. He says buying in bulk brings down the cost.
"We're just really enthused that we're able to work with the rest of the region and take advantage of these high-volume. It benefits not only the city and the county but many school districts and local agencies."
Leech says buying in bulk allows the city to pay about 20 cents less per gallon than the cheapest gas station price.
Six government agencies have approved the terms negotiated by SACOG, but four cities and counties have decided to negotiate on their own.
