The California International Marathon is one of three races that starts at 7 a.m. Sunday, but the road closures start earlier than that. Eighth, 9th and 10th Streets near the Capitol will be closed Sunday morning at 4:30. Tenth Street in front of the Capitol will be closed to traffic tomorrow starting at eight a.m.
The marathon's John Schumacher says 26 intersections will be closed as the leaders approach.
"People near the start of the race are gonna not have roads closed for very long because the runners will be pretty closely bunched together. As the race goes on the course will be closed a little bit longer because the runners will be more stretched out obviously from the fast ones to the slower ones."
Marathoners start at Folsom-Auburn Road, follow Oak Street, then Fair Oaks Boulevard, J Street and finish at the Capitol.
Participants on a six-hour pace or better will have a closed course.
