The Sacramento County District Attorney's office has filed 14 felony charges against a man accused in a shooting spree that left two deputies dead and multiple people injured in Sacramento and Placer counties.
The D.A. charged Marcelo Marquez -who told a judge his real name is Luis Enrique Monroy Bracamontes in the murder of Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy Daniel Oliver.
Bracamontes and his wife Janelle Marquez Monroy are charged with the death of Placer County Sheriff's Detective Michael Davis.
Bracamontes was attentive but his right hand shook while Judge Helena Gweon read the charges against him. Janelle Monroy's eyes rolled into the back of her head at one point. Her breathing was rapid.
According to the complaint, the couple used a Colt-AR 15 rifle and a 9 mm handgun during Friday's crime spree.
The two are charged with attempted murder and causing injury to a motorist when they allegedly tried to take his car.
The couple is also facing attempted murder charges for allegedly trying to kill three other Placer County Sheriff's deputies.
Sacramento District Attorney Jan Scully says her office has not decided whether to seek the death penalty.
"You know, the facts speak for themselves. That is always a special circumstance case and a death-penalty-eligible case."
Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones says it could take weeks to gather and process evidence.
"We have to process meticulously nine, ten cars for evidence. We have to obtain court orders. We have to go through many different scenes as you might imagine because of the series of transactions that occurred in two separate counties in multiple different locations."
News organizations were not allowed to photograph Bracamontes or Monroy's faces during their time in court.
Marquez also faces one count each of stealing a Placer County Sheriff's vehicle and shotgun, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and possessing an assault rifle.
Marquez' wife, Janelle Marquez Monroy, is not charged with the theft of Placer County Sheriff property.
The two did not enter pleas Tuesday and are scheduled back in court December 9th.
