California Governor Jerry Brown has until midnight Tuesday to act on the hundreds of bills still on his desk, including the statewide plastic bag ban and several gun-related measures.
But Brown signed more than a hundred bills over the weekend including measures that overhaul California’s initiative system and reduce sentences for selling crack cocaine to the same length as penalties for selling powder cocaine.
The governor also signed off on placing a measure on the November 2016 ballot. It asks voters to loosen the state’s voter-approved English language learning requirements in schools.
College students will need to affirmatively and consciously say they’re willing to participate in sexual activity for the sex to be considered consensual under another bill signed by the governor. And school districts will no longer be able to expel students for acts of “willful defiance.”
Brown also vetoed 23 bills over the weekend. And he used his line-item veto power to reject $50 million funding increases to the University of California and California State University systems.
