Initially, about 40 people stayed at the Red Cross Shelter in Camino because of the King Fire. An Eldorado County program has helped about a quarter of them stay at more comfortable accommodations.
Star Walker is with the Eldorado County Health and Human Services Agency.
"A lot of our households that have been evacuated qualify with the income guidelines that we need and we're able to place them in a hotel up to five nights."
Walker says each case is reviewed after the five nights are up.
But, some people say they'll stick it out at the shelter until they get the go-ahead to return home. Gary Morris says he doesn't want to upset the family pets anymore than necessary.
"For people who are displaced because of any form of disaster, the Red Cross -they make it as easy a transition of what's happening as possible.
Morris says he's been told it's possible he could return home by Friday.
It's been more than a week since many of the people evacuated.
