Update 9 a.m. - Firefighters Remember Lives Lost In Sept. 11, 2001
Sacramento area firefighters are holding a tribute this hour to the New York City firefighters who died 13 years ago today at the World Trade Center during the 9-11 terrorist attacks.
Three hundred and forty-three firefighters are climbing the Renaissance Tower on K street - that's one for each firefighter who died. They'll climb the tower four times to simulate the 110 flights climbed by rescuers at the World Trade Center.
Chris Manibusan is a Sacramento fire-fighter who's taking part in the climb.
"Those guys were doing their jobs," says Manibusan. "They went there, they had no idea it was an attack... they were risking their lives just like we do every day, we just want to honor what they did, they'll never be forgotten, that day will never be forgotten."
Each firefighter making the somber climb carries the name of one of the fallen firefighters on his jacket. Manibusan says he's proud to carry the name of Lieutenant Andrew Desperito, who left behind three kids and a wife.
People have also been visiting a flag display in West Sacramento at the corner of Jefferson Boulevard and South River Road that's being put on by a local man for the 13th year. It includes 500 large American flags, and nearly 3000 small American flags - each one representing one of the lives lost during the attacks that day. The display will be open through Sunday.
