The Sacramento State University campus is increasing by 150-percent the amount of secure bicycle parking available to staff and students.
Tony Lucas is head of the school's Transportation and Parking Services department. He says 270 spaces near the Guy West Bridge were not enough to meet demand. More bike racks are being installed near the center of campus.
"We're putting in two new staff bike compounds at the AIRC and Benicia and the other by Moraga," Lucas says. "Altogether we should have a little over 400 new bike parking spaces."
Lucas says the school spent eighteen months studying alternate forms of transportation and safety. The spaces are intended to make it easier for staff and students to avoid commuting by car.
There have been nearly three dozen reports of bicycles stolen on campus this year. The school will spend $55,000 a year to staff the compounds with community service officers from the school's police department.
Mikayla Friend is a student. She says she's happy she won't have to break the law to lock up her bike.
"Well it'll be nice so then I can actually make sure my bike's safe so I don't have to leave it unattended -laying around somewhere or attached to a pole I'm not supposed to be attaching it to."
There will be an additional 40 spaces for skateboards.
The compounds cost about $250,000 to install.
As part of the project, 44 unattended spaces are being created near Mendocino Hall.
The bicycle compounds are scheduled to be installed by Friday of this week. Guard shacks are on back order.
