It's possible that the federal Highway Trust Fund will run out of money within the next three weeks.
If the fund is not restored, the Sacramento Regional Transit District will face a $30 million-to-$35million shortfall in next year's operating budget.
RT Director Mike Wiley says the district already understands cuts of that magnitude.
"To put it in perspective, during the recession, with the economy suffering to the level that it did, our operating budgets lost about $40 million a year."
He says, "We ended up cutting service by about 24-percent. We ended up reducing our workforce from over 1200 employees to 850 employees. One hundred fifty to 160 people were laid off."
Sac RT's budget is about $150 million.
He says the District just restored its funding level with help from the City of Sacramento's Measure A sales tax increase.
RT runs 76 light rail trains and 182 buses in the Sacramento region every day.
