As many people prepare for Independence Day celebrations with fireworks in their front lawns, not every city or county allows the sale or use of fireworks.
Laws governing fireworks vary widely in California.
Some cities allow "safe-and-sane" fireworks sold at stands.
But, according to TNT Fireworks, most of Placer, and all of Alpine, Mariposa, Sierra and Eldorado Counties prohibit pyrotechnics.
Daniel Berlant with Cal Fire says its especially important in these drought conditions to make sure fireworks are used only in places where they are allowed.
"Those are the more metropolitan cities -Sacramento, Roseville, Rocklin," says Berlant. "So, it's really important if you live in a different area that you make sure that "safe and sane" fireworks are allowed. Eldorado County does not allow them, unincorporated areas of Placer County, Auburn- they do not allow them."
The Auburn Chamber of Commerce does host a fireworks show every year.
The City of Colfax decided to hold a laser light show this year instead of pyrotechnics.
In Nevada City, Fire Chief Sam Goodspeed says people can't buy fireworks in town, and it's against state law to move them from one county to another. But he says people who have them are allowed to set them off -in non-wilderness areas.
"We give them a safe place to go instead of banning it and then forcing people to use them illegally out in the forest or go hide somewhere and try to do it," Goodspeed says. "That's where you have the problems."
Turlock allows fireworks except for "Piccolo Petes." Those are banned because of the noise.
According to TNT Fireworks, 45 counties and 293 cities in California allow fireworks.
