The Sacramento Preservation Commission has voted to approve the plan for phase two of the Sacramento Valley Train Station renovation. The plan will go to the Sacramento City Council for a vote.
Greg Taylor is the project manager for the City of Sacramento. He says this phase will cost $30 million and will improve the building's appearance and usefulness.
"We'll be starting on a two year re-do of the station," he says, "where we bring Amtrak to the west side of the building -opening up the main lobby out to the historic concourse and out to the tracks for the public and the passengers and the east side is now designated for retail."
Phase 2 will include painting the building in its original colors and restoring the station's mural.
The second floor will be offices. The third floor could also be a leased space with a roof terrace overlooking the Railyards and downtown Sacramento.
Phase one of the project to seismically retrofit the station was completed in March.
The City has applied for federal grants to help fund Phase 3, which will join the building to the tracks with more bus facilities.
