The westbound portion of the Fix 50 road construction project in Sacramento caused several delays for commuters on connecting roadways Tuesday morning and throughout the day.
Dennis Keaton with Caltrans says, at its worst, traffic on westbound U.S. 50 was backed up to Howe Avenue. Traffic on northbound Highway 99 was backed up to Florin Road.
"Fifty percent of the traffic-interfering work still needs to be finished on this project," says Keaton. "You need to get back to that mode of I gotta plan ahead, I gotta get a better understanding of where the traffic's gonna be, and maybe tomorrow's gonna be better than it was today."
Chelsea St. Pierre drove through the construction to get to downtown.
"Yeah, I’ll probably go a different way tomorrow," says St. Pierre. "If I need to come downtown, I’ll probably just come through Fair Oaks."
Westbound U.S. 50 will be restricted to two or three lanes during this stage of construction. Crews are removing concrete from the left lanes of the freeway between 18th and 24th Streets and will pour four inches of new concrete.
Caltrans says that could take until June 10.
Regional Transit has added two trains each on the orange and blue lines and two more to Folsom during peak commute hours.
