Three westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 50 through Sacramento will be closed starting Monday night for the other half of the FIX 50 project.
Dennis Keaton with Caltrans says delays through the construction zone will likely be worse than in the first stage of the eastbound 50 project.
"When we started closing lanes, people still had a heads up traveling into the construction zone because it was straight on," he says. "You could see it coming. What you're having here is a bit of a bend - a turn. So, that's gonna be a concern that people really take it slow when they're coming in."
The construction zone will run from 24th to 18th street on the freeway and will affect the area where 50, 99 north and Cap City Freeway westbound lanes merge.
Keaton says carpooling, bicycling, and mass transit will be the best bets to avoid commute delays. But, if you have to drive, plan an alternate route [root] now.
"Try to exit sooner before you take that ramp onto 50," he says. "If you're still on westbound 50 trying to come into town, the downtown area, look for the alternative to try to get around that by maybe getting on 80 going across the top and using that as the alternative route."
The left three lanes are scheduled to be completed by June 10th.
On June 11th, the second phase of the eastbound work will include the right lanes, 16th street off ramp and connector from Cap City Freeway westbound. One lane of the 99 north connector will also be closed.
Crews will pour new concrete and add supports for the freeway.
