Monday evening, construction crews will begin nighttime-only work on the westbound side of U.S. 50 through Sacramento.
Dennis Keaton with Caltrans says workers will grind down the top surface of the roadway and drill holes to prepare for future concrete work.
"The westbound traffic not really gonna be too interfered with because we aren't gonna do a full closure," says Keaton. "They're able to do it before we do the actual full shut down of westbound 50 for those three lanes on the inside."
Construction on the westbound side will take place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
The speed limit during those hours will be 55 miles-per-hour westbound.
That's also the new speed limit eastbound.
Full-time work on the left lanes of westbound side is scheduled to be begin May 27th.
The right lanes and Highway 99 connector are scheduled to be closed June 11th.
Meanwhile, the Fix 50 road construction project on U.S. 50 isn't the only work being done on Sacramento freeways.
Keaton says crews have begun nighttime work on the southbound side of Highway 160.
"If you haven't driven it, they've got some really rough patches when you're traveling on 160 coming into downtown Sacramento," he says. "It's needed work for quite a while now. That's what is gonna be done where they're gonna grade it down and redo the paving."
Keaton says similar projects are planned for westbound U.S. 50 in West Sacramento and on the Cap City Freeway near Auburn Boulevard and Cal Expo. The projects will likely take one or two weeks to complete.
