The State of California is becoming increasingly concerned about school kids using nicotine. The state issued $17 million in grants to 14 school districts for anti-tobacco programs.
But, Tom Herman with the Department of Education says the state is worried about new products containing nicotine including flavored electronic cigarettes and e-cigarettes made to look like inhalers.
"Anecdotally we have seen a tremendous rise in that -especially in the number of calls that we get from school districts who have seen the rise in that among their students."
About half of the money will go to Sacramento City, San Juan, Folsom, Elk Grove and Stanislaus County school districts.
Superintendent Tom Torlakson sent a letter to schools last month encouraging them to update tobacco policies to include a ban on e-cigarette and other products containing nicotine.
