Blind kids and disabled veterans have been denied access to some of the sports equipment the City of Sacramento typically provides for them every year. Someone stole $25,000 worth of equipment this weekend.
Hockey, scuba and tennis gear were some of the items stolen from River Cats Independence Field in south Sacramento
Alan Tomiyama is the City's Recreation Manager. He says all of the specialized baseball equipment was also taken.
"They took very special bases that emit a sound. And that sound enables the blind children and adults run around the bases knowing that they'll be able to hit that base."
Javelins, Oakland A's jerseys, and wheelchairs used by the disabled for rugby matches were also stolen.
The thieves broke down the door to the cinder block shed. Some of the remaining contents have water damage or were ruined when the thieves ransacked the building.
City employees have not determined how much of the remaining equipment was damaged.
