Tom Dang with the National Weather Service says it's a good idea to avoid driving over the mountains tomorrow afternoon or evening.
"With these low pressure systems that have these very low snow levels, they pose huge problems in terms of travel across the sierra. Research has shown that these low pressures oftentimes can just completely shut down highway 80.”
Dang says snow is also possible at low elevations, including Folsom and Auburn. And he says snow flurries may even fall in Sacramento's eastern suburbs.
Overnight temperatures are also expected to remain at or below freezing in the Sacramento area through early next week.
Sacramento broke a record today, hitting 30 degrees. The previous low was 32 degrees, set in 1972. Stockton also broke a record at 24 degrees today.
