More than nine million people have signed up to drop, take cover and hold-on at 10:17 in the morning. The Great California Shakeout is aimed at making sure the public is ready should another major earthquake strike.
Of course, quakes aren’t the only natural disaster California could face. Greg Renick is with California’s Office of Emergency Services. He said the drill will help with any emergency.
“There are nuances to earthquake preparedness, but a lot of planning is pretty much the same,” Renick said. “Having an emergency plan in place for your family, your business, having emergency supplies, knowing evacuation routes.”
Renick said earthquakes along the San Andreas Fault in southern California and the San Francisco Bay Area could be devastating for the state. He said the Central Valley is also at risk, though it doesn’t get as much attention.
