The bill would lift restrictions on nurse practitioners as long as they are affiliated with a hospital, clinic or other medical group.
Democratic Senator Ed Hernandez resurrected the bill by agreeing to eliminate one way the nurses could become eligible to practice on their own.
“With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, with more and more people having less and less access, we have to make sure that every single person has access to quality health care in the state of California,” says Hernandez.
The California Medical Association says the bill would endanger patient safety by allowing nurses to treat patients beyond their expertise.
The bill has to pass two more committee tests and two floor votes before it reaches the Governor’s desk.
